Rizling Rýnsky originates in Rhine region in Germany, where it can be traced back to 1435, characterised as aromatic grape variety with high flowery and perfumed aromas as well as with high acidity. DNA fingerprinting research by Ferdinand Regner indicated that the parents of Rizling Rýnsky were Weißer Heunisch and Traminer.

Rizling Rýnsky is extraordinarily versatile, it is generally known that wines are reflecting the nature of the place where the grapes where grown. Therefore the characters of Rizling Rýnsky in Slovakia varies a lot between particular regions of origin. The level of acidity can go from being expressively steely, especially when picked too early to mild and rounded when allowed to reach full ripeness. The nose is can vary - peach, unripe apples, lemon peel, quince – mainly from cooler locations, in softer wines sweeter apricots, pineapple and passion fruit. Depending on extract, wines can be spicy, earthy and even smoky character. Once matured honey, marzipan, almonds and raisins appears. In warm regions, when grapes are reaching extraordinary ripeness and acid hydrolysis is taking place, paraffin, petroleum and kerosene tones are appearing.

Quality akostné odrodové víno is produced, lighter styled kabinetné, probably most suiting to variety - neskorý zber (late harvest) or výber z hrozna (grapes selection) both can be found in suché (dry) as well as in sweeter versions - polosuché, polosladké. Grapes left in vine yard to reach very high ripeness are used to produce natural sweet wines such as bobuľový výber (choice of berries) and hrozienkový výber (selection of raisins), special ľadové víno (ice wine) harvested by temperatures below 7°C and slamové víno (straw wine), which spend 3 months by drying on straw mats.

Single varietal or cuveé sparkling wines using traditional method are also produced.
